Try walking into any beauty or cosmetics store, and asking about wrinkle treatment. You’ll soon realize that you’ve just opened yourself up to hours of searching, testing, and label reading. It’s no secret that there are hundreds, if not thousands, of different anti-wrinkle treatments available – so how on earth does anyone know where to start?
A lot of people feel much more comfortable with the idea of taking a more natural approach. Many anti-wrinkle creams feature harsh chemicals or exfoliants that can irritate sensitive skin, and it’s perfectly understandable that you may not want to jump right in with those products.
With that in mind, here are our five favorite natural wrinkle remedies.
Keep an Aloe Plant (or Two) in the House
Hands down, the leading cause of premature skin aging is sun damage. As the weather turns warmer, many people mistakenly assume that the tight and tender facial skin they get after a day spent outside is just the cost of doing business. In other words, if it’s not a major sunburn, it’s not doing any damage, right? Wrong!
After sun care is one of the best ways to prevent premature aging – and we have yet to find a better solution than the leaves of the aloe plant. When you snap off an aloe leaf (don’t worry, aloe plants are resilient, and these leaves regrow), you’ll find they’re filled with a cooling, soothing gel, which can be applied directly to your skin after you’ve been out in the sun. This natural, and readily available skin treatment is full of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatories which all mitigate and even reverse sun damage.
Make a Natural Egg White Mask
For a natural approach to tissue repair, try this recipe:
- One egg white
- 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
- 1/2 teaspoon honey
We like this mask because the egg white provides an immediate source of protein and potassium for your skin. When these two ingredients are combined, they not only promote natural healing, but help your skin cells retain vital moisture, too. Adding honey and lemon juice to the mix creates gentle antibacterial and astringent properties, which can help reduce the look of large pores, and remove excess oil from the skin without over-drying.
For best results, apply this mask two times per week, and thoroughly rinse after 15 to 20 minutes.
Anti-Aging Banana Treatment
If you have been noticing a few age spots in addition to fine lines and wrinkles, try this all-natural banana-based skin treatment.
- One medium banana, mashed
- 1 teaspoon organic, 100% orange juice
- 1 teaspoon plain Greek yogurt
When this creamy mixture is applied to your skin, vitamins A and B work together to reduce the appearance of age spots, and revitalize the skin. Vitamin E is an absolutely essential nutrient for healthy skin, and it can be found in abundance in this all-natural treatment. Bananas are also a good source of potassium, which will help your skin retain moisture, reducing the look of fine lines and wrinkles.
Apply this mask one to two times a week for a deep healing treatment. Wash off completely after 15 to 20 minutes.
Topical treatments are one approach, but don’t forget to treat premature aging systemically, through the help of targeted supplements. Vitamin E supplements help to promote healthy hair, skin, and fingernails. Try to ensure they contain selenium, as this will help your body absorb vitamin E at a higher rate.
Another essential supplement is collagen. Collagen gives your skin its elasticity and resilience, and it also helps you maintain healthy muscles, bones, and tendons. Look for a supplement such as this one, providing at least 400 mg per dose.
Sleep on Silk
One last suggestion: something we often forget is that as we sleep, the delicate skin on our faces rubs up against our bedding. Some fabrics such as cotton, polyester, microfiber, flannel, and fleece can all create friction with your skin, causing areas to get “bunched up” or stretched overnight.
One super simple beauty hack to get around this? Silk or satin pillowcases. Not only are these luxurious, they also help to preserve your skin’s health while you sleep. Your skin does its hardest repair work overnight, so give it the best possible advantage by sleeping on smooth, silky materials.
We recommend that you start with these five suggestions before taking the plunge with commercial anti-wrinkle creams. Take note of how your skin tolerates each of these natural approaches, and see which ones are the most helpful.
